Mathias Dewatripont – Which protection for bank liabilities?

Oxford lecture 2014 – 2015

On June 1^st 2015, Mathias Dewatripont, Executive Director of the National Bank of Belgium and Professor at the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management, gave a lecture entitled “Which protection for bank liabilities?” at the University of Oxford. He was welcomed by Professor Colin Mayer (Saïd Business School).

Abstract

The lecture will start with a brief history of banking regulation, deregulation and crisis management in the last 100 years. It will in particular focus on an evaluation of the cost of bank bailouts. It will then discuss the regulatory trend since the 2007-2008 crisis. Particular attention will be devoted to the EU Banking Recovery and Resolution Directive, and its potential impact on financial stability. The lecture will end with a more general discussion on the tradeoff between insurance and incentives in banking regulation.
