Published by the éditions de l’Université libre de Bruxelles under the direction of Valérie André and Chanel de Halleux, the book Le Monde du roman français (1800-1830) / The World of the French Novel (1800-1830) does justice to the novelistic production of the turn of the Enlightenment and the Restoration, long overlooked by literary history.
“This book could not have come into being without the support of the Fondation Wiener-Anspach” explains Valérie André. “It is the result of a ULB-Oxford collaboration initiated as part of a research project supported by the FWA, which later received funding from the University of Oxford.”
The project, funded by the FWA between 2018 and 2020, was led by Prof. Valérie André at the ULB and by Prof. Catriona Seth at the University of Oxford. “Thanks to the support of the FWA, researchers Chanel de Halleux and Fanny Lacôte worked on the creation of the database CAT19 – Panorama of the French Novel 1801–1830, launched in 2022. This book brings together contributions from specialists, some of whom participated in the conference ‘The World of the French Novel, 1800–1820’, held in Oxford in June 2018″.
One of these specialists is Nicolas Duriau, currently a Wiener-Anspach Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Oxford, where he is conducting research under the supervision of Professor Seth on the topic “(Un)Voicing Male Prostitution during the First Empire and the Bourbon Restoration: An In-Depth Case Study at the Crossroads of Censorship and Gendered Representations in the French Novel (1800-1830)”.
