From 25th to 27th November, 2024 the ULB will host the international conference “Alala Yallali. Women, musical genre and gender identities in chaabi music, from Morocco to the diasporas”. The Fondation Wiener-Anspach is happy to support this event, organised on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Moroccan immigration to Belgium, by funding the participation of Dr Vanessa Paloma Elbaz, Research Associate at the University of Cambridge and a Marie Curie Sklodowska Fellow at INALCO (Paris). Dr Elbak will give a keynote titled “Judeo-Arabic Sha‘bi Divas: Musical Gendered Discourses on Modernity and Tradition” on Monday 25 November at 4.30 pm.
Presentation of the conference
The symposium will explore the practice of women’s music in Morocco and in communities abroad, with presentations from a variety of academic disciplines (ethnomusicology, musicology, acoustics, history, sociology, political science, anthropology, linguistics), artistic disciplines (music, dance, theater), roundtables and guided tours of exhibitions.
