Presentation

Diabetes currently affects 537 million people worldwide and annually causes >6 million deaths. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is the most prevalent type of diabetes, accounting for >80% of patients. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) accounts for around 10% of patients. Diabetes is a complex multifactorial disease driven by environmental and genetic factors. Our project aims to clarify the molecular effects of diabetes risk variants by leveraging large-scale datasets and advanced colocalization methods. We will expand QTL and GWAS analyses to include multiple tissues (fat, liver, muscle, blood) and cellular mechanisms (gene expression, splicing, methylation). We will also develop novel computational tools and integrate environmental factors to better understand how genetic and non-genetic factors interact in diabetes risk. This approach will help identify disease mechanisms and new therapeutic targets for both T1D and T2D.
