12 mai à l’ULB : « Knotty problems », une conférence de Jason Lotay (Université d’Oxford) dans le cadre de la Chaire Phyllis Beddington Wiener

Jason Lotay, Professor of Pure Mathematics à l’Université d’Oxford, est l’un des deux titulaires de la Chaire Phyllis Beddington Wiener à l’ULB, inaugurée cette année par la Fondation Wiener-Anspach. Il est accueilli à l’ULB par le Professeur Joel Fine (Faculté des Sciences).

Dans le cadre de la chaire, Jason Lotay donnera une conférence de clôture intitulée « Knotty problems » le mardi 12 mai à 16h (Salle Solvay du Campus Plaine, bâtiment NO, 5^e étage, salle NO5.06 – voir plan).

Abstract

Knots are part of everyday life, being both extremely useful or very troublesome depending on the situation, as well as appearing in art, literature and science.  Knots are also fascinating for mathematicians and there are many great unsolved problems in the theory of knots that are central to current mathematical research. I will discuss some of the many ways in which knots manifest themselves and some of the knotty problems which perplex mathematicians at all levels from current students to experienced researchers.
